Cardiff and Vale College Visit to Austurland

On July 2nd and 3rd, Eygló met with representatives from Cardiff and Vale College (Wales, UK), who were visiting Austurland. Cardiff and Vale College, the 4th largest college in the UK and the biggest in Wales, has its main campus in the heart of Cardiff. The delegation was led by Gareth Ellaway, Head of Department for Building Services. This visit was part of a Welsh Government-funded initiative aimed at exploring potential partnerships and fostering educational exchanges between institutions in Wales and Iceland.

The delegation’s primary goal was to explore Iceland’s renowned renewable energy facilities. Their itinerary included visits to Skógarafurðir and the Kárahnjúkar – Hálslón hydropower plant. At Skógarafurðir, the representatives learned about advanced forestry practices and their integration with sustainable energy production. The visit to Kárahnjúkar – Hálslón highlighted the impressive scale and efficiency of Iceland’s hydropower capabilities, showcasing the country’s commitment to renewable energy.

The purpose of this trip was not only to gain insights into Iceland’s exemplary renewable and sustainable technologies but also to establish partnerships that would allow for student visits and transfers between Cardiff and Vale College and Icelandic institutions. Iceland was chosen for its leading role in renewable energy, providing a unique opportunity for students to witness hydropower and geothermal technologies in action.

We thank Cardiff and Vale College for their visit and for sharing their commitment to education in the field of sustainable energy. We are excited about the potential for future collaborations that will inspire sustainable practices and provide invaluable learning experiences for students in both Wales and Iceland.
